Best Overnight Diapers 2023
Whether you’re a new or seasoned parent, you know the frustration of picking up your child after a long night of sleep and finding them wet. The best overnight diapers are extra absorbent and designed to keep kids dry overnight—especially once your baby or toddler starts sleeping in longer chunks.
The best overnight diapers contain leaks with extra absorbent layers, encouraging longer sleep ... [+] sessions for babies and toddlers.
“Overnight diapers are generally formulated with extra absorbency layers and ingredients to be more capacious and absorbent, ideally keeping your child dry for up to 12 hours,” says Samatha Eaker, a board-certified pediatric nurse practitioner specializing in pediatric urology who works as a medical advisor at Aeroflow Urology, and is a new mom herself.
Many diaper brands make regular diapers and overnight diapers. In this guide, I’ve rounded up the best overnight diapers, including for parents on a budget, those looking for eco-friendly options and for older toddlers who are starting to potty train. After reading this story, you may want to read the tested best diaper guide, which I wrote after extensively testing more than a dozen kinds of diapers with my infant daughter—or check out the best tested diaper pails or diaper bags.

Pampers Swaddlers Overnights have multiple layers of wetness protection in each diaper. Pampers nighttime diapers claim to offer 50% more absorption than a regular daytime diaper, plus special channels that spread fluid evenly. There’s also additional barriers around a child’s legs to prevent leaks. All of this adds up to stellar wetness protection; I’ve found this to be as true with my daughter as I did with my son. Pampers also performed decently in our regular diaper testing with one caveat: The regular diapers leaked overnight. These extra-absorbent diapers fix this issue. Multiple parents online also praised the Pampers blowout barrier at the back of the diaper, which stops wetness from running up a child’s back.
WALMART
Parents’ Choice diapers (made by Walmart) are, on average, 20 to 30 cents cheaper per diaper than the competition in this guide, but they come highly recommended for those on a budget. As I found when testing regular, non-overnight Parent’s Choice diapers, they’re not perfect: They don’t come with as many layers of protection as our overall top pick, which means they may be a bit more likely to leak. (The daytime models were quite leaky, but the overnights do work better.) Parent’s Choice diapers also have a stretchy (sometimes overly flexible) fit to keep up with a baby that moves in her sleep.

Huggies came out as the best diaper overall during our testing of regular diapers, and they also make a durable, absorbent overnight diaper option. Designed for caregivers with little ones who drink a lot at night or just those who need more leak protection, Huggies Overnights offer peace of mind for up to 12 hours. Double grip strips and a dry touch liner that quickly absorbs liquids give these Huggies an extra layer of wetness protection without sacrificing comfort. They’re also moderately priced, at around 56 to 60 cents per diaper.
Some reviewers have noted that the material used in Huggies Overnights is a bit stiffer than those used in many other brands. But while using these with my daughter, I’ve found that they’re likely talking about the larger and sturdier tabs on each side of the diaper. These are important: Even if the diaper is full of liquid, the diaper will still hold up against tossing and turning.
“They’re great for toddlers, too,” says Rose Gordon Sala, senior editor of baby and kids gear at Forbes Vetted. “I’ve used these through three kids at nighttime and rarely suffered leaks even with active tots who let out a full pee every night.”

With a “cloth-like feel” and no lotion, fragrances or phthalates, Hello Bello’s nighttime diapers provide caregivers with a hypoallergenic option for little ones with sensitive skin. Dyes and fragrances especially are known to irritate skin, causing more diaper rashes and discomfort. So I appreciate that Hello Bello eliminates all the extras.
Their spherical absorbers hold over 50 times the diaper’s weight in liquid, according to the brand, all while maintaining your little one’s freedom of movement with extra stretch in the legs and back to prevent blowouts. The liner is made with a plant-derived material without the use of chlorine processing, meaning that the material that directly touches your little’s one’s skin is as free of skin irritants as possible. Do note the cost, which can be as high as $1.10 per diaper.

Seventh Generation diapers are made from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified, sustainably-sourced wood fluff pulp—and they’re made without the use of chlorine bleaching, lotions or fragrances. Even the plastic film used to package the diapers are made of No. 4 plastic that can be recycled similar to grocery bags.
I loved what the brand stood for when I tested regular diapers but struggled with how leaky these diapers were. But the overnight models are better, according to many parents: they’re designed for extra absorbency at bedtime, “holding onto everything” as one excited reviewer put it. Like most eco-friendly diapers, that comes at a higher cost per diaper charge—these are roughly three times the cost of our value pick.

A comfortable, non-diaper fit makes Goodnites a good option for that difficult transition from daytime to nighttime potty training, especially for kids who are too big to wear normal diapers. These training pants come with a 5-layer protection system and reinforced leg openings to prevent ripping and leaking, especially if the child is active at night. Given that they resemble underwear more than diapers, these are great for your kid’s confidence and self-reliance. Most children can put these on themselves and it won’t make them feel like they’re still a baby. Available in both boy’s and girl’s characters, Goodnights are also fun.

Sposie’s Booster Pads provide additional protection—on top of an overnight diaper—against wetness. You can add these liners to your child’s diaper to prevent leaks. Many reviewers call Sposies a “life changer” for heavy bed-wetters, because they give caregivers a last-resort option. They’ve reached cult status among parents in the know and those with kids who need more protection at night for both them and the bed or crib.
They’re also free of chlorine, fragrance and phthalates and have been tested as hypoallergenic, so you’ll worry less about them being so close to your child’s skin.

For this story, the author, Jenni Gritters, tapped into the expertise of Samatha Eaker, a board-certified pediatric nurse practitioner specializing in pediatric urology who works as a Medical Advisor at Aeroflow Urology, and a new mom herself. Gritters also has deep knowledge about diapers after testing them for more than 6 months with her now-13-month-old daughter for the previous guide on the best diapers overall.
Gritters is a journalist with a decade of experience reviewing kids products, outdoor gear and apparel. You can find her bylines in the New York Times, Forbes, Slate and elsewhere. Most recently, she tested baby carriers and period underwear for Forbes Vetted.
I’ve spent the past year deep in research about diapers while reporting for Forbes Vetted’s best overall diapers guide, learning about absorbency, the mostly inflated claims that revolve around eco-friendly diapers and ever-changing rules about “safe” diapers. I also tested the regular version of most of these brands for that story, so I already had a strong understanding of the best diapers and which perform best in which situations.
For this guide, I also read hundreds of online reviews about online diapers and consulted the parents in my community for their top picks. I interviewed experts, several of whom are quoted in this story. Ultimately, I narrowed my list down to the options in this guide based on the diapers’ absorbency, materials, cost and fit.
